Mr. Dunn Returns to Alma Mater
Mr. Dunn came to South Point in the fall of 1994. He replaced the retiring Mr. Oliver. Before coming to South Point, Mr. Dunn was band director at Franklin HS, in WV & Pender HS, in North Carolina. He received his Bachelor's Degree in Music Education from Fairmont State College, and a Masters Degree in Music Education from Eastern Kentucky University. Mr. Dunn graduated from Fairmont Senior HS in 1982, where he received the John Phillip Sousa Award, and was also assistant band commander. Mr. Dunn had several accomplishments during his seven year tenure at South Point. He took the band to the OMEA State Marching Band Finals in 1994, '95, '98, & '99. When Mr. Dunn first came to South Point, middle school students were used in the marching band. He increased and retained participation at the high school level so that by 1998, middle school students were no longer needed to participate in the marching band. He also started one of the first high school steel drum ensembles in the state. South Point Steel gained regional and national attention. In his last year at South Point, he took the band to Florida, and performed in a parade in front of thousands of people at Magic Kingdom in Disney World. Mr. Dunn took his new job at his home school as the HS Band Director of the Polar Bear Marching Band in the fall of 2001. We would like to thank Mr. Dunn for all of his contributions to our program.
